Ginger Birdie-Bread By Angie Johnson, CAS
This delicious, festive recipe will warm your cold bird to the core! Delicious ginger will explode in his little beak, making it easy to slip in nutritional supplements and extra healthy snacks! Plus, you might even get to try a taste! You Will Need:
2.5 cups all-purpose flour, sifted before measuring
1/3 cup sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1.5 teaspoons ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
1/2 cup melted butter
1 cup molasses
1 egg
1/2 cup buttermilk (1 teaspoon vinegar and enough milk to make 1/2 cup)
1/4 cup hot water
1 whole carrot
1 stalk broccoli
1/2 can of pumpkin
1 yam (boiled until tender)
1 cup shelled pistachios or almonds
Cooking Instructions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Sift together the flour, sugar, salt, baking powder, baking soda, and spices. Stir in melted butter, molasses, egg, and buttermilk or sour milk. Beat in hot water. Chop carrot and broccoli, add to batter. Mix in half can of pumpkin. Mash yam, add to batter. Pour batter into a generously greased and floured 8-inch square pan. Bake for 45 to 50 minutes, until cake springs back when lightly touched with finger. Once cooked, you can garnish with chopped (or shelled) pistachios or almonds.
Why It's Great: Ginger is a favored Holiday spice, but it has more beneficial qualities than just the spicy, festive taste! Ginger has been known to reduce nausea, calm an upset stomach as well as ease stomach cramps and increase circulation. Plus, for us humans; Ginger is often used as a herbal remedy to ease colds, allergies & respiritory conditions. Pumpkin and yam are full of Vitamin D and Keratin, which help promote glossy feathers, skin & beak! Almonds and Pistachios are beneficial because they contain essential lipids and some amino acids, and birds devour them readily.

Tropical Wholegrain PancakesBy Angie Johnson, CAS These pancakes are sure to please even the most discriminating taste buds! Packed with wholegrain goodness and bursting with tropical, banana & coconut flavor; these pancakes are a healthy, delicious breakfast you and your parrot can share! (Though you can sneak more bits of nutritious foods into your bird's portion! Shhh!) WHAT YOU NEED: -1 box of Buckwheat Wholegrain Pancakes (I am so original, I know..) -2 Tbsp. Ground Flaxseed (w/ water) -1 Cup of Almond or Rice milk -1 Cup of Shredded Coconut -1 very ripe Banana, Mashed -1 tsp. Vanilla Extract (or 1 Vanilla bean's insides, scraped.) HOW TO COOK:To make 6-8 Pancakes, put 3/4 Cup of Pancake mix into a medium bowl. Mix the Flaxseed with the appropriate amount of water to substitute 1 Egg. (according to directions on box, it varies depending on the brand of Flax you're using) Mix in 1 Cup of Rice or Almond Milk. Mix in your mashed Banana and 1 Cup of shredded Coconut. Mix in your teaspoon of Vanilla extract. Now, heat up a non-teflon skillet on low-medium heat and spray with cooking spray. Once it heats up (if you put a drop of water on the skillet, it should sizzle), pour about 1/2 Cup of batter onto the skillet. You can add additional, chunkier items to the batter at this point. You could sprinkle chopped Broccli, chopped walnuts, thinly chopped carrots, etc. to the top of the pancake, before you flip. Once the edges are forming little divets and bubbles, flip the pancake and let sit for about 5 minutes. Remove from heat, let cool & repeat! Garnish with blueberries, raspberries or any delicious fruit you wish to make an absolutely pallet-exhilirating dish you and your bird will love to share!
